Foux's Footprints

HOWDY! NEWS! NEWS!
Newsletter for the Week of October 24-28, 2011

READING
This week we will continue to read nonfiction texts, focusing on procedural writing. Students will learn about the purpose of procedural texts and key words. The reading skill instruction will focus on drawing conclusions, summarizing, and multiple meaning words.
WRITING
At the beginning of the week, students will complete a district writing benchmark. Students will be given a topic and will be asked to plan and write a paper about this predetermined topic. Benchmarks will be graded to determine future writing instruction and needs.
Students will also spend time this week discussing forms of writing other than stories. With a topic of their choice, students will write poems, letters, songs, or lists. They will then revise, edit, "fancy-up", and publish their pieces. We are excited to see their writing creativity!
MATH
This week, we will be learning more about each other as we create GRAPHS! Students will learn to survey, tally, record data, create graphs, and analyze information. Be sure to stop by our classroom to see the variety of graphs that the class creates.
For our graphing fun, please see the email from signupgenius.com if you would like to donate items needed for next week Thanks in advance for all the items donated! It makes their learing so much more exciting!
SPELLING
The spelling pattern this week is another review of short vowel sounds. Please check your child's folder on Monday for a list of their spelling words.
SCIENCE
This week in science we will be continuing our discussion on energy, but our focus will be on motion. We will do several activities to discover the energy behind rolling, spinning, and sliding. Next week, we are going to need 4 buttons and 1 clothespin per child. Will you check around your house to see if you have any of these items you could donate? We would greatly appreciate it.
LUNCH RECESS
As you know, our Caraway students are privileged to have recess after lunch each day. This time allows the children to have an extra recess in addition to their grade level recess. Lunch recess is celebrated and favored among the students, but safety and supervision has become a concern. We want your children to be safe at all times, and lunch recess is no exception. This is where we need your help. Parent volunteers are needed to help in the cafeteria and at lunch recess to ensure the safety of all students. Without the proper supervision, lunch recess may cease to exist. If you can help, we would greatly appreciate it. And your child would appreciate it, too! The sign up form can be found on the Caraway PTA website:
